High Speed Haze

Today was mostly a travel day - up early to catch the high speed train to Xi'an, and then settle in to an apartment at one of the universities that our friends had arranged.

Travelling by high speed train is wonderful. All the comfort of being on a train, while speeding along at just over 300 km/h. The trip took 6 hours, with a subway connection right in the station. The kids played cards and snoozed while the adults discussed plans for our time in Xi'an.

Unfortunately the weather was rather dull - the thunderstorms from the previous evening had failed to clear the air. Looking out the window at the blur of countryside the haze was quite pronounced.

A non-stop series of farms, small towns and construction sites. So much new construction going on everywhere you look.

In Xi'an we settled in to a wonderful apartment for visiting teachers - the teachers are all on summer break which means we have a delightful place to stay.

We headed out for another lovely meal hosted by friends of our friends, and then a walk around an overwhelmingly lavish shopping complex. Complete with a massive LED screen that stretched over much of the ceiling of the complex.

Then the evening fountain show.

And a pretty view of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda.

Then time to catch up on sleep after a long day.
